Alvin Allen, age 7l, of Terre Haute, a native and former resident of the Cates community, died suddenly and unexpectedly in the sanctuary of a Methodist Church in Terre Haute Sunday, March 13. A retired coal miner, he had been serving as caretaker at the church. He was born and reared in Cates and he had been a coal miner for many years. Mr. Allen is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Janie Allen; one son, Edward; three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Ada Callahan, all of Terre Haute; one brother, Riley Allen, who resides a mile north of Cates, and one half-brother, Oscar Flowers of West Terre Haute. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Bedino Chapel of the Valley in West Terre Haute. Burial was in the Snoddy Mill Cemetery, south of Covington.
